5th Annual Kid Power a Success

   The 5th Annual Kid Power: Empowering Kids for Success held Saturday drew a crowd of 6,000 at the Appalachian Fairgrounds in Gray. Highlights for the day were Mr. Peabody, the Opossum from Bays Mountain, Andy the Ambulance, Jericho Junction, Search and Rescue Bloodhounds, Wings Air Rescue, the Chuckey Doak Soccer Clinic and the Obstacle Course by Girls Incorporated of Kingsport. More than 70 exhibitors, outdoor activities and events kept kids busy all day.

   Area law enforcement, emergency services, and rescue teams brought heavy equipment and allowed the kids to get a closer look, including Kingsport Lifesaving Crew, Johnson City Fire Department, Sullivan County Sheriff's Department, and Johnson City/Washington County EMS.

   The hammering never stopped at the Doak House Museum, where kids wielded hammers to create their own tin punch.

   This year's key organizers were The Arc of Washington County, Tennessee Voices for Children, Johnson City Medical Center's Children's Hospital, and Frontier Health's Project BASIC, RIP program, and HOPE for Tennessee.

Remote Area Medical Returns to Wise

   The 8th annual Remote Area Medical health outreach will be held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 25 and 26, and from 6 a.m. to noon on July 27 at the Wise County Fairgounds, Wise, Virginia. Last year's event provided healthcare to 8,431 patients, and the dollar value of care was estimated at $1,365,804 over the three-day event by 1,377 volunteers. Survivors of Suicide Support Groups are in Tennessee and Virginia.

   The Tennessee group meets from 6-8 p.m. the 4th Monday of each month at Johnson City Medical Center, 5th Floor. For the Tennessee group, call Dorothy Gregory at (423) 928-9062. The Virginia group meets at 6 p.m. the 4th Thursday of each month. For the Virginia group, call Bill Russell at (276) 346-1641.

Virginia Regional Suicide Prevention Coalitions

    The Lee County Suicide Prevention Coalition formed to raise awareness and determine the available resources in the Lee County community for suicide survivors. The group meets at 2 p.m. the fourth Thursday of every month at Lee County Behavioral Health Services in Jonesville. Call Bill or Phyllis Russell at (276) 346-1641. The Wise County Suicide Prevention Coalition meets the second Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. at Baptist Student Center at UVA-Wise. please contact Rica Maralit at (276) 523-8357.     Frontier Health is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Frontier Health maintains responsibility for the program and its content. Three hours of credit is given.

Didactic Training Requirement for the Certified Substance Abuse Counselor

   Frontier Health and Planning District One Behavioral Health Services is presenting a 10-month comprehensive training for people seeking to fulfill the 220 hours of Didactic Training Requirement for the Certified Substance Abuse Counselor Credential offered by the Virginia Department of Health Professions. The training covers all 10 required areas of study and will meet from 8:30am-4:30pm on the second Wednesday of each month. The CSAC and CSAC-A are the baseline credentials for individuals seeking to enter the field of addictions treatment in Virginia. For more information contact Eric Greene at (276) 523-8300.

CCDHH Sign Language Courses

Helping to Bridge Gap

   When spoken word is not heard, any gap in communication makes daily living difficult. When this communication gap is closed through sign language, the more than 22 million Americans who are deaf are given new opportunities and chances to lead a more fulfilling life.
    Frontier Health’s Communication Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is working to narrow the gap by offering courses in American Sign Language. For more on upcoming trainings, call CCDHH call 423-434-0447, or TTY 423-434-0448.

Highlights September

Frontier Health Greenwood Challenge Instructor Training in 2007. Greenwood Challenge is a four-hour ropes course that is a carefully planned outdoor learning environment. Both mental and physical problem-solving activities are designed to resolve group challengs in a safe and supportive environment.
